Day 217… Phnom Penh
Today we bet a sleep in before our private bus to the capital city of Phnom Penh (approx 3 hrs and more chatting with Jo… as well as sleeping… its exhausting this trip!) On the way we stop VERY briefly at the town of Skun at the spider markets to sample eating tarantulas. And I must apologise… tho I have been game for many things… including silk work and cricket the other day… I CAN NOT do spider… very few of us could. Heck… kids are running up to us with live giant hairy bloody spiders ON THEM AS PETS making this one of the creepiest places I’ve been this side of the Island of the Dolls in Mexico! All i have to say os a) spkders can go and die in a fire and b) NOPENOPENOPENOPENOPE!!! And poor Shirley on tour with us from Scotland was shaking with fear as we pulled up with her arachnophobia, but calmed down after a while when we lead everything away from the bus. After that nightmare fuelled excitement we nibble some lychee and lotus fruit (which is a bit like a pea or bean) and continue our journey.
Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, is set on a major junction of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers and boasts some fine examples of French-inspired architecture. Aftet check in, it starts to rain, but screw it we take in the sites by cyclo through the central market, US Embassy, Wat Phnom, Mekong river front, independence monument, finishing at the Royal Palace where i have a go at riding my cyclo while my driver sits up front! Here we learn about a brighter period in Cambodian history with a visit to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda… as well as see the best palace ever… giant Vegas lights and associated gigantic portrait of the King… now THAT’S how you royalty!
