SOUTH KOREA SELF TOUR
Day 206… Its airport time again as we head from Japan to South Korea. Not too long a flight a d touch down was smooth. Getting out i find a taxi is too expensive, but a helpful info girl points me at a bus for ₩10,000 which is really good. Almost 90 mins later I am in Seoul and trying to find my hotel. After a few wrong turns i return to the bus stop and just look up… there it is. Dammit. Mentally kicking myself, I head for it… but seem to miss it somehow. Finding a very helpful hostel, they look it up for me and I find it is just behind it in a side street, wouldn’t know if you weren’t looking. So job done I check in. Sorting things out i grab a shower and do some washing… down to my last set of clothes. After that its explore time! Well… explore for dinner. It’s sunday so not much is open near me… but i do find a Korean fried chicken joint and… not knowing Korean… manage to order a meal for 2. Well… sighing i scoff most of it… but the rest I get wrapped and drop off to an old homeless guy in spotted on the way here. Jobs done its back to zed-land in my hotel.
Day 207… Slightly overcast day today… but that didn’t stop it from being awesome. It’s get my butt out-and-about time… time to explore. So first things first I go have breakfast at the hotel, OJ and cereal and toast. Tops… been needing a good simple brekky for a while. Then i hot foot it back to the super helpful hostel to book my 1st of 2 tours for tomorrow. .. a full day around Seoul. I also chat extensively with some of the folks here, good people and a good place. Job done I head the other way and stumble upon a tourist info booth and discover that i am literally right near a major tourist spot, Cheungdouk Palace! Cool! So I do some souvenir shopping and grab an ice cream cane… no you read that right… not cone… CANE. It’s an upturned candy cane ice cream cone the size of a real cane… one side filled with vanilla ice cream, the other chocolate. Fantasmagorical! Then its home I go with my booty to look at postal services etc. The post office is likewise nearby and easy to use, so other plans aside i buy a big box and return to mail stuff home, both souvenirs and unused gear. After i drop that at postoffice, it’s off to visit the Alive Museum… a fun little museum that is essentially a bunch of empty rooms with brilliant paintings on the walls at extreme angles so they create photographic illusions you can interact with. Some have props too, but if you are solo like me, it makes it difficult. So I loiter and enlist folks to help snap me, some are selfies, some are set up with my camera on a timer. It’s silly but fun stuf. That done, it’s some nigt markets, dinner time and sleep time. So not a spectacularly amazing day, but necessary nonetheless.
