ay 186… Xitang
Because of time restraints in getting to our overnight train on time, our guide sensibly flips our days here. So first up we enjoy a trip to Xitang, one of Shanghai’s nearby water towns by private transport (approx 2 hrs).
Xitang is a welcome escape from the bustle of Shanghai, especially in the evening when the day trippers have left. We wander along the canals criss-crossing the town, chill out by the waterside and sip tea at a teahouse, sadly of the standard local history museums and local odd museums (like the roof tile museum or button museum), traffic has delayed us and we don’t get to see them. Still, it’s and grand day seeing beautiful water ways and do old asian architecture before we return to chinese local dinner before we catch a performance by the famous (& AMAZING) Shanghai Acrobats. They had all the usual crazy human body pushing shenanigans, balancing, etc along with astounding magic, cunning plate spinning action, and the hypnotic woman with a giant metal hula hoop that she performed in, on and around. Just beautiful to watch
