Day 166… Quiet Kusadasi, whose white sand beaches and incomparable shopping are a stone’s throw from the legendary excavation of Ancient Ephesus and the Terrace Houses, one of the largest and most complete ancient cities in the world… AND I NEARLY MISSED IT! I didn’t get to sleep straight away last night and had no idea how I would sleep on a boat. Astoundingly well it appears as I wake up to the sound of housekeeping on the door… its 10.30! So up I leap… get my shit together and find out from on-board reception where the hell to go and emerge into Turkey with a little over an hour to spare! So my whirlwind tour began and ended with the thrilling metropolis of Izmir, Kusadasi’s fantastic covered bazaar, where i get to shop with a view of the town’s picturesque harbor. I buy a few trinkets and get business cards for 2 palaces to later order myself a Turkish rug as well as a gorgeous mosaic lantern. After that I re-board and we head off.
Next we arrive at 17:00 at the blessed island of Patmos, a verdant, mountainous paradise considered one of the world’s loveliest destinations. Many believe John the Apostle wrote the Book of Revelations in a mountainside grotto on Patmos where he heard the voice of God. At the top of the mountain, within the white walls of Hora, the monastery founded in his honor in 1088 stands guard above this holy island. However I see none of that as I really want just 1 day enjoying everything on offer on the cruise ship. So I get some pool action… some lunch buffet… some photography… a fantastic therapeutic massage… some ice-cream… and just lap up the sun and not much else. A great wind down day before grabbing more great buffet food (& the buffet has 2 personal chefs on the floor doing d.i.y desserts or pastas… scrummy!)
