Day 163… Today i have booked myself in to a quick trip down to re-visit the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel. I am still suffering with a nasty head cold, so my 1st job is find a chemist for some flu pills, brekky and juice. Job done I head off to St Peter’s Basilica. Once there in manage to put myself into totally the wrong queue and find myself in line to do something completely unexpected but cool… I get to climb INSIDE the St. Peter’s Basilica dome itself! I didn’t even know u could do that! It’s tiring… but very cool. View down to the floor of the basilica… then out to the dome edge.. finally back to the actual roof of the church… and there’s a souvenir shopping on it run by nuns! Bizarre. Then its back down to see the real basilica… breathtaking stuff. Feeling totally wasted, I stumble upon Ruth and Toni off my tour and we grab lunch together, which is fortuitous as I crash for a 7 min power nap in the restaurant. Then its off to the Galleria Borghese and Sistine Chapel via 1 and a half hours of Vatican Museum corridors… I had forgotten about that. It has changed so much since I was here 21 years ago. .. only in that u could breathe back then… it is literal wall to wall non stop human traffic now… and drink in the famous bit there’s a cage across half of it to funnel people and… because of technology… sooooo many more guards stopping photos across did a guy on a LOUD SPEAKER telling people to be quiet. You can’t even stop to enjoy the view really. Worth it… but not like it was… I even laid on the floor last time to admire it for a bit… now u can’t move! Afterwards I am feeling wasted again. .. after bumping into Rosie off the tour to cancel our dinner together (just too exhausted) my final thing today is to refind the Capuchin Monk bone church and check it out. It’s upgraded too with no big angry monks not giving up change… there’s real shop people with tourist stuff for sale… and the walls are now white instead of bare earth making it all mildly less creepy. Then.. I die in the hotel room… but not before literally barely making it across the road for spag bol #6.
