Days 160, 161 Florence
Day 160… Board a train bound for Florence (approx 3.5 hrs). Florence, the cultural heart of Tuscany, bursts with religious treasures and Renaissance masterpieces. It’s been said that during the second millennium, a third of Europe’s most important artists lived in Florence. The minds and talents of the Medicis, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Brunelleschi, Machiavelli, Donatello and Michelangelo all flourished here. On our orientation walk, I find where my pre-booking Uffizi tickets are and discover its a full tour… starting NOW… and I can’t rebook foor tomorrow. So it’s off i go to visit the Uffizi, one of the world’s oldest art galleries and a work of art itself… and even cooler to see the VASSARI CORRIDOR, open ONLY to tour guide groups and only a few hundred people get to see it every day. When you compare that to the tens of thousands in the gallery, that’s special. I am quite pleased to see this secret 1.5 km gallery winding through the upper levels of Florence… including 1 stretch that sneaks behind the royal viewing box at the Medici Chapels looking straight in! Then its out and find me a restaurant for spag bol #4.
