Days 158, 159 Cinque Terre
Day 158… Travel on a tiresome series of trains to the Liguria region, home to La Spezia and the Cinque Terre (approx 5 hrs). A medieval port town whose name is derived from its historic importance in the spice trade, La Spezia is our base for exploring the nearby (approx. 30mins by train) stunning stretch of coast known as the Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre (‘Five Lands’) is an area famed for the beauty of its coastline and its picturesque villages. Before the advent of the railway, its ancient systems of hillside footpaths were the villages’ only link to the outside world. This is the picture postcard place you know of uber colourful little villages clinging to cliff faces. So a slow bus ride later we get to see some truly amazing ocean views off cliff based castles before heading to dinner… at a place that has only sea food. As I am not up for that i leave to dine solo… and spectacular timing as I manage to get some fabulous sunset shots. Then its spag bol #3.
