Days 155, 156, 157 Venice
Day 155… Travel by train through stunning scenery to one of the world’s most unique cities – Venice, the city on stilts. With its grand city of canals, Venice is built over a hundred small islands connected by 400 bridges, 1000 gondoliers and umpteen hawkers selling all kinds of stuff. Still, rich with artistic masterpieces, modern Venice combines history with contemporary life through food, performance, art and architecture… and pasta. I looove pasta. In fact, despite my trying a lot of new foods everywhere I go (see ANIMALS I HAVE EATEN below) i know italian food… so since i have had little in the way of familiar foodstuffs so far, I will do my level best to have my favourite Italian meal (spaghetti bolognese) for every damn meal in can!
Now… there are only two ways to explore Venice – by boat or on foot. So first off is the token orientation walk to see some of the more popular sights, including the Grand Canal, the shops of the Rialto Bridge (disappointingly covered mostly in scaffolding and mesh), the Palace of the Doge (ruler of Venice), the Piazza and Basilica di San Marco and the famous Bridge of Sighs (where ye olde times would see prisoners cross to hear thier – inevitable – death penalty and returning with a huge SIGH. Hence the name). Then its off to dinner & a hearty lasagne bolognese for or final farewell of this 2nd leg. Some goodbyes… some stayers… tomorrow more newbies and a new guide.
