Day 131
Hop up for brekky at last then head to the old OLD streets and a market to supply our picnic in Avignon. Stroll the streets in Avignon, and walk across the normal bridge for aaaaages. A surprise pit stop was the St. Andre Abbey and gardens. Exploring this walled city we really got to see a most magnificent view of this picturesque valley. Then we continued and lunched on breads, cheeses, meats and fruit in a garden overlooking the valley and palace/ castle. Quick birthday big-ups to fellow tour member Michelle, some amazing photos taken (Inc some lovely romantic ones with Michelle and her partner Jeremy) then the long walk back via an ice cream shop as well as the largest medieval Gothic palace in the world, the Palais des Papes. Built in the 14th century after Avignon became the official residence of Pope Clement V, its sprawling grandeur decimated the papacy’s income during construction. The fortified halls are now mostly undecorated, but the cavernous chapels speak volumes about the wealth of the papacy. In the evening, birthday din-dins with the gang… except 1 member who… frankly… is friggin nuts and totally unsociable. Ah well… her loss.
